To celebrate the Millennium, the Marquetry Society prepared a composite exhibit comprising over 40 interlocking hexagonal panels. These panels were made by groups and individuals across the UK and the work came together for the first time at the 48th National Marquetry Exhibition at Hall Place, Bexley, Kent, in May 2000. The Staffordshire Group participated in this project, providing two panels. The first featured, naturally, the pottery industry that has had such a dramatic effect on the prosperity and scenery of our county. |

A characteristic "bottle kiln", this one taken from a painting by Staffordshire artist Ivan Taylor which was used on the cover of the Exhibition catalogue |

A potter works at a wheel using techniques that have changed little in hundreds of years This dramatic figure is the other famous Josiah - Josiah Wedgwood - taken from a statue that stands outside the North Staffordshire Hotel, by Stoke-on-Trent railway station |

The remaining items are a "Stafford Knot" - a symbol widely used throughout the county - and a silhouette of the county with two small kilns marking Stoke-on-Trent and a tiny hexagon marking our home town - Eccleshall. What's the gory story behind the Stafford Knot? ... follow this link ... if you dare ! |
