Staffordshire Marquetry Group - member profile

Zoë O'Sullivan

Zoë joined in 1997 and brought considerable artistic ability and talent to the Group. Her work draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources including posters and greetings cards, but always includes elements of her own design. Cats seem to appear frequently! She has since moved away from Eccleshall but retains contact with the group as an "e-member".

Zoë exhibited her work for the first time at the Marquetry Society's 1999 National Exhibition.

Brooklands 500 Mile Race

Based on a poster for the famous endurance race this picture's sun-burst background forces us to gaze on the road ahead and the horizon - just as the driver would. Notice the careful use of natural shading in the veneer to give the roundness to the driver's helmet.

Watching the Plains of the Jacaranda Tree

Simple but effective. Note the sand-shading near the horizon and the lacewood representing the cheetah's spots.

Purr-fect Reflections

Is it a reflection, or a shadow? If any picture proves that you don't need lots of pieces to make an effective work then this is it - just five veneers and only six inserted pieces. What isn't shown here is the design curving around the edges of the baseboard.

A tremendous first picture.

Welcome Home

Another cat and another simple, yet effective original design. This picture is a miniature - only about 50 mm square.

Moonlight

Loosely based on a drawing in a child's story-book, this was Zoë's winning entry in the Group "Tree" competition judged by members of the public visiting the Eccleshall Show in 1998.

The cloud effect is achieved by allowing dark marks in the background veneer (freijo) to continue across the moon (bird's eye maple).
