Staffordshire Marquetry Group - member profile

Gerald Owen

Gerald is unique! Although he is an accomplished knife cutter he now does most of his work using his own cutting "engine" which he made from an old manual sewing machine. Considerable modification has produced a machine that cuts with a stabbing motion using a fine needle honed to a chisel shape.

Gerald is a member of the Marquetry Society and has exhibited at several of the Society's National Exhibitions.

The Cutting Machine

Document Box

A lovely box veneered in oak with a traditional Louis cube and shaded oval design. Gerald also made all the side stringing by hand.
This box deservedly received 3rd place in the Beginners' Applied class at the Marquetry Society 2004 National Exhibition, giving Gerald his first National award.

Scrabble Table

Originally produced for the Group 'Game Board' competition, Gerald has since turned this board into an attractive table. He has plans for further interchangable tops!

JC Box

Simple but beautiful. This picture was taken before the hinges were fitted, which explains the marginal misalignment - sorry Gerald!

Time Flies

An effective design produced using the cutting engine.

Susan's Melody Box

Another beautifully made box with a semi-traditional design.

Grandfather Clock

A Gerald tour de force - a full-size grandfather clock with compensating 'lyre' pendulum. The principal veneer is oak. Notice the neat quartered panel with central fan design at the bottom and the smaller motif at the top of the pendulum window which has a mongram for the lucky recipient.

The spindles either side of the face were turned by our Treasurer, John Archer.

Grandfather Clock

Another piece that started out being made for a Group competition. At that time, only the face was made, but now Gerald has completed the head of this grandfather clock.
